640 BC (1D)The son of Manasseh, and fourteenth king of Judah. He restored idolatry, and set up the images which his father had cast down. Zephaniah (1:4; 3:4, 11) refers to the moral depravity prevailing in this king’s reign.
He was assassinated (2 Kings 21:18-26: 2 Chr. 33:20-25) by his own servants, who conspired against him.55
- 2Kgs.21: And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.
- 2Kgs.21: Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.
- 2Kgs.21: And the servants of Amon conspired against him, and slew the king in his own house.
- 2Kgs.21: And the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.
- 2Kgs.21: Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
- 1Chr.3: Amon his son, Josiah his son.
- 2Chr.33: So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.
- 2Chr.33: Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem.
- 2Chr.33: But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them;
- 2Chr.33: And humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more.
- 2Chr.33: But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.
- Jer.1: To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
- Jer.25: From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.
- Zeph.1: The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.
- Matt.1: And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
