Dread, a descendant of Canaan, and the ancestor of the Hittites (Gen. 10:18; Deut. 7:1), who dwelt in the vicinity of Hebron (Gen. 23:3, 7). The Hittites were a Hamitic race. They are called “the sons of Heth” (Gen. 23:3, 5, 7, 10, 16, 18, 20).

  • Gen.10: And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,
  • Gen.23: And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,
  • Gen.23: And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,
  • Gen.23: And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth.

  • Gen.23: And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
  • Gen.23: Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
  • Gen.23: And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
  • Gen.25: The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
  • Gen.27: And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
  • Gen.49: The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth.
